Birdsboro Fire Department to

Host Community Blood Drive

The Birdsboro Union Fire Department will host a community blood drive in partnership with the Miller-Keystone Blood Center on Saturday, April 4, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The blood drive will take place at the fire department, located at 214 W. First Street in Birdsboro, with donations collected in the upper lot area.

Community members are encouraged to schedule an appointment in advance by calling Miller-Keystone Blood Center at 800-223-6667, extension 2, and referencing Sponsor Code 5542, or by scanning the QR code on the event flyer. While walk-ins are welcome, organizers note there may be a short wait without an appointment.

All donors must present a valid ID that includes a first and last name and either a photo or signature. Donors are also encouraged to drink plenty of fluids and eat within two to three hours before donating.

Veterans attending the drive can ask their coordinator about receiving a complimentary Miller-Keystone Military Challenge Coin.

Organizers say community blood drives like this one play a critical role in maintaining the local blood supply and helping save lives.

Maloney Backs Melissa Brewer as Successor After Retirement Announcement

State Rep. David Maloney, who represents Pennsylvania’s 130th District, has announced his endorsement for the seat following his recent decision to retire.

Maloney said he is supporting Melissa Brewer as his preferred successor for the position. In a statement released Saturday, Maloney highlighted Brewer’s experience and connection to the community as key reasons for his endorsement.

Brewer, a lifelong Berks County resident, has worked as both a teacher and school administrator. She previously announced her candidacy for the seat on Feb. 24, describing herself as a conservative Republican seeking to represent the district in the Pennsylvania General Assembly.

Maloney’s endorsement comes shortly after he confirmed plans to step down from the role he has held representing the district.

Amity Township Crime Watch

to Dissolve After 40 Years

After more than 40 years of service, the Amity Township Crime Watch is preparing to dissolve, marking the end of a longtime community safety effort.

Founded by Carolyn and Alan Browne after their home was burglarized, the group organized volunteers who patrolled the township in their own vehicles, serving as extra eyes and ears for police. In the early years, patrols occurred nearly every night, and the organization also hosted community meetings and safety education programs at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Douglassville.

The program had strong support from former Police Chief Maurice “Dutch” Eschbach, who attended meetings regularly and viewed the group as a valuable community partner.

Over time, however, membership declined as longtime volunteers aged and fewer new members joined. Now 73 and 81, the Brownes are the only surviving original members.

Earlier this year, the board voted to dissolve the nonprofit, with its March meeting likely to be the final one. The group’s popular document-shredding event will continue under a private vendor.

For the founders, the decision marks the end of an era for community involvement in the township.
