Daniel Boone Homestead Celebrates Pennsylvania’s Birthday

The Daniel Boone Homestead Associates will kick off their 2026 season with their annual Pennsylvania’s Birthday Open House, a living history event celebrating the founding of the Commonwealth.

The event commemorates the day William Penn received the land grant for Pennsylvania from King Charles II of England in 1681, an occasion historically known as Charter Day. Visitors will have the opportunity to step back in time and experience life in the eighteenth century through demonstrations, tours and hands-on activities.

Guests can take part in open-house tours of the Boone House, where interpreters will share the stories of the three families who lived there during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Volunteers will prepare a traditional meal over the open hearth while discussing the historical period known as the “Six Weeks of Want.”

Inside the parlor, visitors can explore an apothecary display and learn about medical practices of the eighteenth century. Additional historic buildings throughout the site will also be open, including the Smokehouse, Blacksmith Shop, Homestead Barn and the Bertolet Log House.

Throughout the grounds, volunteers will demonstrate traditional trades such as spinning, blacksmithing and gunsmithing. In the craft shop, visitors can try writing with a quill pen and learn about colonial-era education. Families with children can also enjoy colonial toys and games.

Admission to the event is free, although donations are welcome. Organizers ask that pets not be brought to the event, with the exception of service animals, and note that smoking is not permitted on site. Some activities and demonstrations may vary depending on the weather.

The program is funded and presented by the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates.
