Fastnacht Day Returns to

Boyertown Museum’s Historic Diner

The Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles is bringing back one of its most cherished traditions with the return of Fastnacht Day inside the iconic Fegely’s Reading Diner. The annual event will take place Tuesday, Feb. 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., inviting guests to step inside the beautifully preserved 1938 diner to enjoy coffee and freshly made fastnachts.

Fastnachts, a beloved southeastern Pennsylvania tradition, are typically prepared just once a year on the eve of Lent. The custom dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries, when German immigrants settled in the region and observed Lenten fasting practices. In preparation for the 40-day season, households used up ingredients such as sugar, butter, and lard by frying sweet dough treats. Made with potato flour, sugar, eggs, and butter or lard, fastnachts are known for their crisp exterior and soft, tender center.

During the event, fastnachts will be available for 25 cents each, and coffee will be served for 5 cents per cup. In addition to enjoying the festive treats, visitors will have full access to the Museum’s extensive collection of historic vehicles and exhibits.

Docents will be available throughout the day to share insights about the more than 90 locally manufactured cars, trucks, carriages, bicycles, and motorcycles on display. Guests can also observe live blacksmithing demonstrations in the original Jeremiah Swinehart Carriage Factory, part of the Museum’s gallery space and open daily to the public.

Fastnacht Day is supported in part through the generosity of Frecon Farms.

Founded in 1965, the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Located at 85 S. Walnut St. in Boyertown, the nonprofit museum preserves Pennsylvania’s rich road transportation history within the former Boyertown Auto Body Works factory buildings. In addition to its vehicle collection, the campus features three examples of historic roadside architecture: a 1921 cottage-style Sunoco gas station, an early 20th-century tourist cabin, and the 1938 Jerry O’Mahony diner.

The Museum is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and AAA members, and free for children 12 and under. More information is available at www.boyertownmuseum.org or by calling 610-367-2090.

Wyomissing Grants Conditional Extension to Berkshire Mall After Safety Repairs

Big news for Berkshire Mall 👀

Wyomissing officials have granted a conditional extension allowing the Berkshire Mall to remain open after recent inspections uncovered significant safety concerns linked to extreme cold weather.

Borough officials responded on Feb. 9 and 10 after reports of burst water and sprinkler pipes at the mall. The damage was attributed to prolonged freezing temperatures. During emergency plumbing repairs, the Borough Building and Fire Code Official and Code Enforcement Officer conducted broader inspections and identified additional issues.

Among the deficiencies cited were inadequate heat in several vacant tenant spaces and public common areas, non-functioning HVAC units, and a temporary loss of the mall-wide fire suppression system.

In response, the borough issued a Notice of Unsafe Structure and Order to Vacate on Feb. 11. Property ownership was given 48 hours to complete corrective actions, with a deadline of noon on Feb. 13. The notice warned that failure to make required repairs could result in the property being deemed unfit for human occupancy.

The order was posted at the mall and formally served to Namdar Realty Group’s corporate office and legal representatives. Tenants were also notified of the required repairs and the potential consequences.

Since receiving the notice, mall ownership has worked to address the violations. Borough officials allowed repair efforts to continue through Friday afternoon to facilitate progress. Follow-up inspections confirmed substantial improvements to both the HVAC and fire suppression systems.

In coordination with borough officials, Namdar Realty Group was granted a conditional extension to complete the remaining repairs. The mall is permitted to remain open under continued monitoring, and officials stated that immediate enforcement action will be taken if necessary.

Borough leaders emphasized that compliance with building and fire safety codes is mandatory and that safeguarding public health and safety remains a top priority.

What do you hope to see next for Berkshire Mall?
