Shapiro Urges DHS to Reconsider Proposed
ICE Facilities in Berks, Schuylkill
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro is calling on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to reconsider proposed plans for immigration detention facilities in Berks county.
In two letters sent to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, the governor outlined concerns about the potential use of warehouse properties along Mountain Road in Upper Bern Township and in Tremont Township, Schuylkill County, as ICE detention centers. He warned that converting the sites into detention facilities could pose risks to nearby residents and strain local resources.
According to the governor, the proposed facilities could overwhelm existing water and sewer systems and place additional pressure on local emergency responders. He also raised concerns about possible financial impacts, including the loss of local tax revenue tied to the properties.
Shapiro is urging federal officials to reevaluate the plans and emphasized that his administration is prepared to explore all available options to block the facilities from opening, citing concerns about the well-being of Pennsylvania communities.
